What a receipt includes

What names mean is never a guess here; it's the sum of checkable parts.

Some traditions, like elvish compounds and most fantasy naming, have no source corpus to quote. So the names are built to sound like the tradition, and the tradition line says exactly that: invented, Norse-flavored, never passed off as Old Norse. A fake etymology is worse than an honest invention, and where the name data comes from is written down source by source.

What Names Mean and How They Work

Every tradition on this site has a grammar, and the grammar decides what names mean. Four examples, one per family:

• Elvish compounds. Thalwen = thal (forest) + wen (maiden), which means "forest maiden." Stack meaning-bearing parts; the gloss is their sum. How elvish names work
• Japanese kanji. Mizuki is 美 (beautiful) + 月 (moon). Same sounds, different characters, different claim; the receipt reads the characters, and the family name comes first.

How to Pick the Right Name

The loop has five steps, and the last one is a test, not a feeling.

1. Generate a batch. Ten is a good number; three is a trap.
2. Read the receipts and cut anything whose meaning you can't defend.
3. Say each survivor out loud. Names live in mouths, not in lists.
4. Stress-test where it fits: game table, group chat, book cover, roster. The right name survives its context.
5. Keep the one left standing, and sleep on it before you commit.
